Contact & Homeroom Teacher
All students at Ideal are assigned a staff member who is their Contact Teacher. The role of the Contact Teacher is to communicate to staff concerns regarding an individual student to the student’s family. The Contact Teacher is also someone you can contact if you have any general concerns you wish to communicate to the entire staff, to receive an update on your child’s academic progress, or to let the staff know about any extra curricular activities or extended absences.
If you have a concern about a specific subject or wish to communicate with a particular teacher, please contact the teacher directly. We particularly encourage the student to initiate this process, but parents should feel free to contact teachers with any questions they might have as well as contacting the Head Teacher, Ernie Pao.

Students and parents may access the services of Churchill’s Counselling Department. A counsellor is assigned specifically to Ideal and is on-site every Tuesday and Thursday mornings, but can be accessed at other times through his office at Churchill. Jeff Pratt (604) 713-8189 loc. 7607
School Liaison Officer
Our School Liaison Officer provides support and information to all students and staff, and is a good resource of accurate information and advice on matters related to alcohol and drugs, motor vehicles, criminal and civil law, and the role of the police officer and law in our community. Our School Liaison Officer’s office is next the main office on the first floor at Churchill Secondary. If the matter is pressing, and you need immediate assistance, please ask for an administrator.
Students who are ill should not come to school. Students who are not feeling well at school should go to the office to sign out. Parent/guardian permission will be required to send a student home.
In the case of an injury at school, students should report to the office to assess the injury. Minor injuries will be treated. If the injury is more serious, medical attention by a doctor may be recommended and a parent/guardian will be contacted.
Medical professionals are available for health teaching, counseling, and consultation on health matters. A community health nurse, employed by the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, is available one half day a week. The nurse has an office next to the main office at Churchill, and a mailbox in the main Churchill office. A school doctor is also available by referral from a school counselor.
Parent Advisory Committee
Ideal is fortunate to have a very effective and supportive Parent Advisory Committee. Being involved with the PAC is an excellent way for parents to participate in their child’s education. The PAC meets at the school on the 1st Monday of every month at 7:30 pm unless notified otherwise. If you would like to receive notification of future PAC Meetings and PAC sponsored events, please inform the office to be included on the PAC email list. Also, feel free to join our Ideal Mini Parents Facebook page for updated information from our PAC.
Academic Information and School Policies
Academic progress is reported three times a year and interim reports are mailed whenever necessary. Parents are encouraged to phone/email anytime during the school year if there are any concerns academically or behaviourally. Report cards are made available on the MyEdBC system.
Ideal is a school for academically motivated students. It is expected that students will maintain a minimum B average. Due to the nature of our program, we cannot accommodate split grades. If a student fails a course during the year, they will be required to repeat that course during summer school before returning to Ideal the following year. If a student fails more than two courses, they may be asked to leave Ideal, due to timetabling issues.
If the staff feels that a student’s academic achievement is below that which is expected at Ideal, he/she will be asked to attend a meeting with his/her parents to discuss solutions to help the student achieve success.

The student/family portal of MyEdBC allows families to view students’ report cards and attendance and is also a vehicle for student course selections each year. The website address for the portal is https://www.myeducation.gov.bc.ca/aspen/logon.do. Parents and students need to know the following information in order to access the Student/Family portal:
- Login ID – this is the student number
- Password – this password is set by the student/family
- Security question and answer
- Primary email address should be changed to personal email
Students with IEPs
Some students at Ideal with specific learning needs may have Individualized Education Plans. If your child is has an IEP, you would have been involved in its creation. The District Resource Teacher at Churchill is responsible for creating and maintaining IEPs for any students at Ideal. The District Resource Teacher ensures that the goals are being met and that any necessary supports are in place. Any IEP concerns should be directed to the District Resource Teacher.

Core Competencies (BC Ministry of Education)
The core competencies, along with literacy and numeracy foundations and essential content and concepts, are at the centre of the redesign of curriculum and assessment. Core competencies are sets of intellectual, personal, and social and emotional proficiencies that all students need to develop in order to engage in deep and life-long learning. Through provincial consultation, three core competencies were identified.
Communication – The communication competency encompasses the set of abilities that students use to impart and exchange information, experiences and ideas, to explore the world around them, and to understand and effectively engage in the use of digital media.
Thinking – The thinking competency encompasses the knowledge, skills and processes we associate with intellectual development. It is through their competency as thinkers that students take subject-specific concepts and content and transform them into a new understanding. Thinking competence includes specific thinking skills as well as habits of mind, and metacognitive awareness.
Personal and Social – Personal and social competency is the set of abilities that relate to students’ identity in the world, both as individuals and as members of their community and society. Personal and social competency encompasses the abilities students need to thrive as individuals, to understand and care about themselves and others, and to find and achieve their purposes in the world.
Core competencies are evident in every area of learning; however, they manifest themselves uniquely in each discipline. In the current drafts of the redesigned curricula, competencies are embedded and evident within the learning standards. Competencies come into play when students are engaged in “doing” in any area of learning. This includes activities where students use thinking, collaboration, and communication to solve problems, address issues, or make decisions. The ultimate goal is for learners to employ the core competencies every day in school and in life, and for the core competencies to be an integral part of the learning in all curriculum areas.
Importance of self-assessment
Students comes to the classroom with experiences and knowledge related to Core Competencies. Self-assessment will allow them to develop the ability to describe themselves as unique individuals in relation to the Core Competencies. They will set goals and gain ownership of their learning when they have the opportunity to self-assess and describe who they are as learners, document their progress, and share their accomplishments in an ongoing and holistic manner.
Research on assessment emphasizes the importance of students developing reflective language and metacognition (i.e. the ability to think about thinking) in order to engage in effective self-assessment. It is important that over time, students:
- Gain the ability to assess their own strengths
- Create realistic and achievable goals
- Construct a clear plan to reach their goals
- Provide examples and evidence of their learning
- Revisit previous documentations of self-assessment, where applicable, to monitor their growth
Grade 8–11 students are required to take a full course load (8 on-timetable classes minimum). Grade 11 & 12 students are required to take the majority of their classes at Ideal. Grade 11 students are required to take a minimum of 6 courses at Ideal. Grade 12 students are required to take a minimum of 4 courses at Ideal, which include English 12 and Leadership 12. Required courses and electives that are offered at Ideal must be taken at Ideal as part of our program.
The Vancouver School Board offers a number of online and distance education courses through the VLN. Although students may take some of these courses, in order to maintain the integrity of the program they are not allowed to take any online or distance education course that are offered at Ideal.
Due to the nature of Ideal’s program and schedule, we cannot timetable students who are seeking to accelerate beyond their grade level. Students who are looking to accelerate may have to continue their studies elsewhere.
Students who wish to take courses at Summer School that are NOT offered at Ideal are free to do so. This may include Completion, Preview, and Skill Development courses.
Students who were unsuccessful in core courses (English, Math, Science, Socials Studies) during the regular school year will be required to complete these courses during the summer session prior to returning to Ideal Mini in the Fall.
Late Assignment Policy
Unless prior arrangements have been made, all assignments must be handed in at the beginning of class on the due date. An absence does not automatically earn an extension.
Large Assignments (such as essays and projects)
- Students will lose 10% of the assigned (not the total) mark per class.
- A reasonably executed assignment will not be awarded a mark of less than 50% if it is handed in within a couple of weeks.
- No late assignments will be accepted during the last week of the term.
Small Assignments (such as paragraphs and worksheets)
- Will be subjected to a reasonable penalty depending on the teacher.
- Will not be accepted once the teacher has gone over or handed back the work in class.
Test and Quiz Make-ups
Unless prior arrangements have been made, students are expected to be in class on the day of a quiz or test. Being absent does not automatically entitle the student to make up a test.
- Students must provide proof of legitimate absence to the teacher to make up a test.
- Students will make arrangements with the teacher on the first day back after an absence.
- Students will make up any missed tests or quizzes as soon as possible after returning from an absence.
- Students may be given a different version of the test than was given to the rest of the class.
- Students do not have the right to make up tests for unexcused absences.
- If a student must leave school midday, but has a quiz later, that student must check in with the teacher to make arrangements.
Absences or Lates
Students are expected to arrive at school on time every day, unless they are ill or have special permission from parents and teachers for an excusable absence. Absences will be excused for the following reasons only:
- Medical/dental appointments (which cannot be easily scheduled outside of school hours)
- Religious holidays and special ceremonies
- Bereavement/family emergency
- Authorized in-school service with an administration slip
- Organized school activities with subject teacher’s permission
Excused Absences Procedure
- In the event of an absence, please email all staff members each day your child is absent from school.
- A teacher is not obliged to acknowledge a note/email that is received beyond one calendar week of the student’s return to class.
- It is the student’s responsibility to see each teacher to enquire about making up any work missed due to an excused absence. This is best done prior to the absence, if possible.
- Please note that some teachers may have their own procedures for their classes in addition to our school procedures. See course outlines for each class.
- For PE class, if a student is unable to participate due to prolonged injury, illness, or health concerns, a doctor’s note is required.
- Please note that you must email every day your child’s absence, not just the first day, as circumstances for absence may change over time.
- To report an absence for a Churchill class, please call 604-713-8189.
Any absence that does not fit the above criteria or any absence for which the above procedures are not followed will be treated as an unexcused absence.
Unexcused Absences Policy
- Consequences will result from unexcused absences, including loss of marks
- Students do not have the right to make up or hand in work missed due to an unexcused absence
- School policy does not require teachers to provide missed work, nor give extra time for assignments and tests missed due to unexcused absences
- Absences due to Extended Vacations are considered to be unexcused absences
Ideal does not recommend extended absences from school or extended vacation periods. The school should be contacted before any such absences and parents should be aware of the ramifications.
In the event that an extended absence (one week or longer) is required, the Student Extended Absence Request form and an Assignment Sheet for Extended Absences must be completed by the parent/student and initialed by the teachers. These forms can be obtained from our school office and must be completed at least one week BEFORE leaving the school. Please note that:
- teachers are not expected to provide assignments either before or after or give any make-up tests or exams
- tests, assignments, and projects missed may result in loss of marks
- students are responsible for any course content missed
Students going on field trips must have signed permission from their parent/guardian. The teachers whose classes are being missed should also sign the form.
Signing out of School
If a student must sign out of the school during the school day, parental or guardian consent is required. Please provide your child with a written note or contact the school office and speak with a staff member directly to give consent. Once consent is received, the student needs to sign out in our log book in the office.
Note that a student cannot sign out for the day unless parent or guardian consent has been received by the school.
This computerized phone system will be used primarily to advise parents of students’ attendance. Please ignore occasional messages that may be meant for Churchill students.
Code of Academic Ethics
Ideal Mini School aspires to develop honest, ethical, and accomplished students capable of being responsible citizens. Educational achievement reflects an individual’s subject area performance and honestly acquired skill, knowledge, and ability.
Students who cheat are serving neither their own nor society’s best interests. Some examples of cheating include:
- plagiarizing/copying material from any source (eg. other students, the internet, a tutor) without appropriate acknowledgment. This includes essays, assignments, homework submitted for marks, lab reports, computer programs, drawings, sketches, designs, video or audio takes, and all other assigned work
- supplying information or work of any kind to another student with the knowledge that it may be copied or used for marks
- copying from another person’s test paper, or knowingly allowing another student to copy from one’s test paper
- unauthorized communication of any kind during a test
- bringing or using unauthorized notes or equipment (including electronic translators, programmable calculators, computers, etc.) for a test
N.B. Being absent without an acceptable reason from a test or class assignment will result in the student receiving a “0″ and may result in further consequences as listed below.
Cheating Policy Consequences
On First Offence
- the student will receive “0″ for that particular work
- the incident will be recorded on the student’s discipline file
- the parents/guardians will be informed
On Second Offence
In addition to all first offence consequences:
- the student will not be eligible for School-based Scholarships for that academic year
- the student may be suspended or transferred
Academic Risk/Probation Policy – 3 step process
As part of a mini school program, students at Ideal Mini School are expected to maintain a strong level of effort and achievement. In order for students to fulfill these goals, a commitment to homework, study and attendance, is a prerequisite for success.
Our staff will support Ideal Mini students to attain their educational goals in the following ways:
- assist in the planning of course selections
- monitor student progress
- create a support Action Plan
- supervise study sessions
- monitor student attendance
- maintain parental contact
Step 1 – Academic Risk
Students who demonstrate, with consistency, a mark of 60% or less due to poor effort, missing assignments, absences or lates will be identified as being academically at risk. The subject teacher(s) will send an interim report card to the parents/guardians and discuss options. Any student continuing to be at risk will progress onto the next step. A meeting with the student, parents/guardians and staff may be called, if appropriate.
Step 2 – Academic Probation Placement
The student will be placed on an Academic Probation contract if the following occur:
- a mark of 60% or less in two or more courses AND / OR
- a significant number of absences, as per our Attendance Policy
Parents/guardians will be notified, in writing, that their child has been placed on Academic Probation. A meeting will be set up between the student, parents/guardians, guidance counselor and teaching staff to create a mandatory Action Plan and discuss any other possible support available to the student. The student will have two weeks to improve their mark and/or attendance. The academic probation letter will be kept in the student’s file
Any student who is on Academic Probation may be required to attend mandatory work-study sessions and must follow their personalized Action Plan. Probationary students may have their privileges to participate in school teams and/or competitions, optional field trips, dances etc. revoked.
Step 3 – Review
Following the 2-week probationary period, any student who demonstrates progress in assignments and marks will have their Action Plan updated and/or extended. The student will need to maintain satisfactory standing for a minimum of 4 additional weeks. If the student’s marks and assignments improve and they no longer require an Academic Probation contract, the student will be removed from probationary status.
If assignments and marks are not significantly improved, and the student is still not meeting academic standards (> 60%) in more than two classes, a meeting will be set up between the student, parents/guardians, teachers and guidance counsellor with the understanding that the student will be recommended to withdraw from the Ideal Mini School program at the end of the school year. Resources and support will be recommended to help find a more suitable program.
Code of Conduct
Violence, possession of weapons and stealing are considered to be very serious offences. Such offenses may include verbal, written, or physical threats, bullying, fighting and physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. Students who are involved in a violent act, as defined in the Vancouver School Board Violence Prevention Policy, or who are involved in theft at the school will be suspended for a period of time, transferred to another school, or both.
Race Relations/Social Equity/Harassment Policy
The Vancouver School Board wants students and parents to know clearly that it will not tolerate any form of racial or gender bias within its jurisdiction. It is the school’s view that all members of our school community shall be treated with equal dignity and respect. We are dedicated to upholding this position and furthering social harmony amongst our students. Ideal prides itself in offering a safe environment, free from harassment of any kind. Any student involved in racial, ethno-cultural, religious, or sexual harassment in any form will face disciplinary action.
Students and parents expect schools to be safe, where students can learn and teachers can teach in a warm and welcoming place, free from bullying, intolerance and violence.
Bullying is a pattern of aggressive behaviour meant to hurt or cause discomfort to another person. Forms of bullying include:
- Physical – where a person is harmed or their property damaged
- Verbal – where a person’s feelings are hurt through insults and name-calling
- Social – where a person is shunned or excluded from groups and events
- Cyberbullying – where a person is discriminated against, harassed, or excluded in an online setting
Any student involved in bullying in any form will face disciplinary action. Though it may often be difficult, we encourage students and parents to consult staff and report any incidences of bullying.
While it is not the function of the school system to impose or prohibit fashions or styles of appearance, the Board of School Trustees (the “Board”) recognizes, as a custom of the elementary and secondary schools of the City of Vancouver, that each student shall attend school clean and tidy in person, and shall refrain from wearing hair styles, clothes, footwear, jewelry, and other articles of personal adornment that are, by reason of extreme styling, a distraction to the student himself/herself or his/her fellow students, or that are otherwise adverse to effective teaching in his/her class. These standards and regulations of dress shall apply equally to all students regardless of gender.
Examples of clothing that are not considered appropriate for school includes (but is not limited to):
- clothing with offensive language, slogans, and/or sexual references
- anything which promotes violence or discrimination against individuals or groups of people
- undergarment are clearly visible and displayed
- excessive amounts of skin showing (e.g. revealing tops and extremely short shorts/skirts/dresses, etc)
The staff at Ideal Mini will be enforcing this dress code for all students regardless of gender. If your manner of dress is found to be distracting, disturbing, or offensive to others, you will be asked to cover up, change, or be sent home.
Since September 1, 1990, all Vancouver School Board buildings and grounds have been smoke free areas. Staff, students and members of the community using school facilities are not permitted to smoke in any area of the VBE properties. We expect that students will respect the good relations we have with our neighbours and will refrain from smoking and littering in the neighbourhood. Also, smoking is not permitted at any school-sponsored function.
Alcohol and Drugs
Ideal Mini School enforces the Vancouver School Board policy regarding alcohol use and drug abuse by students. A student who has consumed alcohol or taken illegal or non-prescribed drugs and is on any school premises, or at any school function, or has brought or is in possession of alcohol or drugs on school premises or at any school function, will be subject to immediate implementation of school and Board policies regarding student discipline. This may include suspension, withdrawal, or transfer of the student(s) involved.
Vandalism is a serious breach of students’ responsibility. The School Act, Bill 67 (10), 1989 states:
If property of a board is destroyed, damaged, lost or converted by the intentional or negligent act of a student, the student and the student’s parents are jointly and severally liable to the board in respect of the act of the student.
Skateboards, Scooters, Bikes
In consideration of others, skateboards, scooter, bikes and other similar equipment are not permitted within the school. Bicycles are not allowed inside the building. A bike rack is available outside the school for students to use. If skateboards or scooters are your transportation to school they are to be carried to your locker where they remain during the school day and then carried to the perimeter of the property.
Cell Phone and Mobile Devices
Due to their disruptive and distractive nature students are expected to turn in their cell phones and mobile devices at the beginning of each class. These devices are to be turned OFF. Alternatively, students may choose not to bring them to class. Contravening this policy may result in confiscation of the device. The exception to this policy is if the teacher authorizes the use these devices for educational purposes during a class.
Please note that confiscated devices will need to be picked up by a parent/guardian. A letter documenting the contravention of this policy will need to be signed by the parent/guardian and student involved.
Parents, please DO NOT call your child’s cell phone during instructional time as it is extremely distracting to the teacher and other students. In the event of extreme emergencies, call the office, but please keep in mind that due to limited office hours (Mon – Fri, 8:00 am – 3:30 pm), we cannot guarantee that messages will always be relayed.
Computers and Internet
Ideal students have available school computers as well as wireless internet access. Students are expected to adhere to Vancouver School Board policy on computer and internet usage, but as a small community, we expect an even greater degree of responsibility, particularly in terms of social media use and internet access. Please follow these guidelines:
- The Internet is a public place, and as such, general school rules for behaviour apply.
- The school network is an educational tool, not an entertainment medium.
- Network storage areas will be treated like school lockers. Network administrators may review files and communications to maintain system integrity and ensure that users are using the system responsibly. Users should not expect that files will always be private.
- Any unauthorized use of school systems or networks is prohibited. Examples of unauthorized use include but are not restricted to the following:
- Sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures
- Using obscene language
- Harassing, insulting, or attacking others
- Vandalizing and/or damaging computers, computer systems, or computer networks
- Violating copyright laws by engaging in plagiarism, illegal downloads, etc.
- Sharing password and user ID
- Using another’s ID or password
- Trespassing on another’s folders, work, or files
- Employing the network for commercial purposes including buying or selling goods or services
- Revealing the personal address, phone number, picture or other personal information of yourself or any other person without permission
- Installing unauthorized files or software on school systems or networks
- Accessing inappropriate Internet sites, online chat rooms and game sites
- Violations may result in a loss of access as well as other disciplinary and/or legal action.
Visitors to Ideal / Intruders
The Vancouver Board of Education policy allows for VBE personnel, VBE elected officials and VBE students from other schools participating in sanctioned events to be at Ideal Mini. All other persons who are visiting the school are to report to the office. Anyone found on the premises who does not have an acceptable reason may be charged under Section 177 of the School Act. Similarly, Ideal Mini students are not permitted to visit other schools while those schools are in session, unless they are visiting for a school sanctioned event.
General School Information
Street parking is available around the school. No students or parents should park or drop off in the staff parking lot.
Ideal students are encouraged to use the library and participate in the sports teams, clubs and activities at Churchill. However, they should be reminded that they are not Churchill students; therefore, all visits to our Steward School should have a specific purpose. General visiting during class time is not allowed. Admin slips are required to go to the library during class time.
Ideal students are welcome to access the library facilities and materials at Churchill. Library hours are posted on the door. Students must use their go card to sign out library materials; if lost, the student is responsible for the replacement costs. Please note that, during class hours, students may only access the library with teacher and librarian permission.
Clubs and Sports Teams
Although Ideal has a few ‘informal’ clubs, the majority of the club and sport team activity is through Churchill. Students are informed weekly of meetings and tryouts, etc., but they should also consult the daily Churchill Student Bulletin posted outside the office or use the Churchill mobile app for news updates.
There are many opportunities for Ideal students to participate in extra-curricular inter-school athletics at Churchill. Student activities include officiating, managing, timing and score keeping. Activities are grouped into seasons and are typically scheduled to begin after school hours. Teams are formed according to age. The divisions are Bantam (Gr. 8), Juvenile (Gr. 9), Junior (Gr. 10), and Senior (Gr. 11 and 12).

P.E. is mandatory for all students in Grades 8, 9, and 10 at Ideal. Proper gym strip must be worn consisting of proper shoes, sweat pants or shorts, and T-shirts or sweatshirts (without buttons). All students at Ideal must participate in the weekly “Tour d’Ideal” walking program.
All curricular and school information photocopying/printing is provided through limited school funding. Unfortunately, Ideal does not provide photocopying or printing services for students. Students are expected to print their assignments, etc., at home.
As a school that values our own sense of community, Ideal feels that our students need to exhibit a responsibility toward our school. To this end, we expect all students from Grades 8-12 to participate in at least one social responsibility initiative during the school year such as: Open House, Drama Nights, school clubs, Desserts, Arts and Drama etc.
We also have a tradition of our senior students providing leadership and mentorship to our junior students. Senior students are expected to set a positive example and be role models for our junior students.
Ideal prides itself on its spirit of community. This cannot be maintained without full student participation in all school activities. Attendance and participation in activities like the annual camping trip, holiday functions and field trips, etc, are what make Ideal a special and important place.
Students who do not involve themselves miss out on an important aspect of being a part of the school community.
In an effort to reduce our environmental footprint, students are required to bring their own dishes and cutlery to any events involving the serving of food.
Ideal Mini has a thirty-year history of student involvement in the actual operation of the school. Each week we have a student-run school meeting that all students are required to attend. This is a chance for students to be involved in some of the decision-making processes of the school, announce special projects and activities, and to pass along information.
Annual Camping Trip
Each year in the fall, Ideal Mini goes on a three day camping trip. The purpose of the trip is to foster the sense of community that is so important to Ideal. Participation in the camp is a necessary part of the Ideal experience and it is essential that all students attend. Extenuating circumstances need to be submitted in writing to the head teacher if a student needs to be exempted. Alternate work will be provided. Financial Aid is available.
Desserts, Arts, and Drama (DAD)
In what has become an ongoing event at Ideal, every year in the spring, the students, staff, and the PAC celebrate both the achievements and community spirit of the school through our Desserts, Arts, and Drama Night. Students display their art, present a series of short plays, and enjoy a large selection of tasty desserts. A Silent Auction is also held in order to raise funds for PAC-SPONSORED school activities and equipment.
Students in Grades 8, 9, and 10 are required to participate in the Ideal Mini Science Fair. A selected group will then participate in the Vancouver District Science Fair then possibly the regional finals. The preparation takes place over a few months and parents are encouraged to participate in the process.
Grade 10 planning students, after completing the BC Food Safe Certificate Course, take turns running a 2 week school café. They offer nutritious items at affordable prices from 11:40 am-12:10 pm daily.
Ideal has a number of courses that operate partially online as well as courses that use blogging, wikis, etc. It is expected that students will act responsibly and safely in using these resources and will at all times maintain the security of these Idea-based sites. Parents are encouraged to view all the online activities at Ideal. Most of our Moodle-based courses accept guest access. Our school website is at www.idealminischool.ca.
Textbooks and Equipment
Students and parents are reminded that they are responsible for the cost of missing or damaged textbooks and equipment. Any equipment lent out for student use (eg. calculators, cameras, sports equipment) is expected to be treated with respect and returned in the condition it was received. The Yearbook may be withheld upon failure to replace or pay for damaged or missing materials.
When the fire alarm sounds, all students must follow the teacher’s instructions. The general rules are as follows:
- Students follow teacher instruction: the teacher will lead students to the designated exit and school field.
- A quiet and orderly departure ensures instructions are heard.
- Once outside, students must remain with their class and move well clear of the building. Students are to organize themselves in alpha-order within their class.
- The engineer will signal when it is safe to return to the building. No one is allowed to re-enter the building until instructed to do so.
At the first sign of motion the following procedure must be followed:
- DROP-COVER-HOLD. Seek shelter under desks or tables.
- Keep your back to windows and move away from windows and avoid shelves and glass cabinets.
- Keep away from steam heat radiators.
- Remain under cover and in position until at least 60 seconds after the shaking has stopped. Wait until your exit has been checked and you are instructed to leave the classroom. Remain with your class at all times.
- Evacuate the building. STAY CLEAR OF EXTERIOR WALLS.
- Assemble in the school field, in alpha-order within your class, away from buildings, trees, poles, fallen wires, or glass. Do not enter the building unless instructed by one of the staff.
- Once attendance is completed by staff, the teachers will guide the school to the Churchill south field. Reunification procedures for parents and students will be in effect. Students will only be released to a parent/guardian or emergency contact on record.
Lock Down Procedures
During a Lockdown, at the request of Emergency Services, or due to a potential threat from within the school, staff and students remain in classrooms until advised by Police that it is safe to exit the building. LOCK classroom doors; Turn OFF lights, and DRAW blinds and curtains. KEEP EVERYONE VERY QUIET. While in the classroom, students and staff are to be seated on the floor in the safest corner away from any sight lines through windows or doorways. Cell phones should be silenced/face down. Students not scheduled for classes will be sheltered by administrators and/or counsellors in safe areas of the school. A LOCKDOWN is signalled by voice (Ideal Mini) OR by 3 short bells repeated and a PA announcement (Churchill). Classes on fieldtrips or outside of the school do not re-enter. Our school off-site meeting or muster location is the Marpole Community Center.
Hold and Secure Procedures
Hold and Secure occurs at the request of the administration and/or Emergency Services. Typically, a Hold and Secure is called when there is an incident/ potential threat OUTSIDE of the school. Students will be allowed to move freely in their classrooms and between classes during regularly scheduled breaks but may not enter or exit the building until the Hold and Secure is lifted. PE classes would not be permitted to be outside and should enter the building immediately. We lock our external doors in a Hold and Secure.
Shelter in Place Procedures
Shelter in Place occurs at the request of the administration and/or Emergency Services. Typically, this is a response to an exterior environmental hazard or danger, making it unsafe to be outdoors. Students are sheltered from environmental hazards until it is safe to exit.

- Free or low-cost birth control options
- Pregnancy testing and options counselling
