Vancouver Opera in the Classroom

Vancouver Opera in the Classroom:

We have had a very exciting opportunity to round out the year in our Social Studies and Drama classes.  Vancouver Opera provided us with 2 musicians who, over 10 sessions, helped the Grade 8 and Grade 9 classes write the music and the words to an opera.

On Friday June 8 we staged the world premier of The Tale of Skookum Jim as well as the legend of Madam White Snake. The show featured all members of the 2 classes with students playing violins, horns, and our brand new piano.

We would like to thank the folks from Vancouver Opera and I’d like to acknowledge the hard work and the bravery all of our students who put on the performances.

Founded in 1958, Vancouver Opera is regarded worldwide for its exceptional work on the stage and in the community.

PROJECT OPERA

Project Opera is a highly interactive program for students that brings the magic of opera into the classroom. Students and teachers will work in collaboration with Teaching-Artists from VancouverOpera to write, stage and perform their own opera based on source material from the classroom.

Inspiration can come from anywhere – retell the story of a class novel, delve into the experiences of early settlers to British Columbia or explain the water cycle through song – anything and everything can be explored through opera! Project Opera is a new and innovative way to bring the performing arts into Metro Vancouver schools.
